Tarrac na Farraige is a new four-part observational documentary series for RTE following the highs and lows of life at sea through the eyes of professional fishermen working from ports around our coast. For the score of Tarrac na Farraige I wanted to acknowledge the Sea Shanty tradition but not lean into it too heavily, for the opening title sequence I went for an ever so sparse accapella version along with some sound design, with vocals provided by the wonderfully talented Catherine Dowling. Throughout the score there are gestures at old sea shanty melodies but always performed in a different manner than you would expect. Modern vessels are feet’s of ingenuity employing huge crews, factories at sea while on the other end of the scale there are still lone fisherman making their living from tiny boats that have changed little in over a thousand years. The score reflects this in its more acoustic, traditional, sparse approach to the smaller vessels and its more modern synth drivers score for the larger ones.
